Learning to tolerate the treadmill

– Posted in: injury treadmill

I’m now in the recovery phase from the injury issues I’ve had in the last months.  In my buildup back to running, my trainer is trying to convince me to ‘run less run faster’.  The starting point for me has been half mile repeats at my tempo pace, which for now we are targeting as 8:30 per mile.  I’m definitely used to running this pace for short races, and even set PR’s around this pace earlier in the year at 10k and 10 mile distances.  I’m really excited to see if targeted training at this pace (faster than my typical old training pace) will allow me to improve my times for long distance running.  I’d really like to beat 2 hours for the half marathon again (last done in Jan 2010) as well as 4:30 in the marathon (last, and only, done in Feb 2009)

To accomplish this, I need to use the treadmill, at least in the beginning, to make sure the pacing is right.  Gah!  So far I’ve done 4 treadmill workouts in the last 2 weeks.  That is literally probably as many times as I’ve been on the treadmill in the last 4 years!

Completed 4 half mile repeats on 7.1 (8:27 pace) with 2 mins of walking in between.  This workout is not a problem for me.  It does feel challenging and it is nice to be running hard again.  Looking forward to seeing where this takes me!
