Breaking news!
I see on the NYRR site that they are announcing a cap of 5000 runners for most races starting in Jan. It is a great testament to the popularity of running events and the increase in participation in the 15 years I’ve been participating. I remember fondly the races that used to start and end at the engineers gate at 90th St before the race sizes started getting so big. I used to love the out and back 5k’s that would be impossible to do today.
I say good for them (and us!). Let’s keep it safe and orderly for everybody as some of the races have gotten so huge and unwieldy. The wave starts have helped make things more orderly from a running perspective, but capping the race limit will keep the general crowds down, and reduce the number of people running around on race day to register.
A quick glance at the stats for 2008 show that most races have under 5000 people, but there are definitely a few that had more. Curious to see which races fill up and how quickly…

Ugh, not happy about that news. I often sign up last minute due to an uncertain schedule, so this may hurt me.
